Face-Cut Differences in Spec Baits

The jaw of the Night Hawk lure in hand, and pictured in Luckey's book, is a bit complex and very distinguishable.

The upper jaw cuts through about 3/4th of the diameter of the lure's head. The jaw joint is rounded, not angular. The lower jaw lip is sliced short with a cut that parallels the angle of the upper jaw cut.

Head of an Al's Spec The slightly less than equilateral cut in the head gives this lure a longer upper jaw and a mildly obtuse angle in the jaw joint. This cut is characteristic of Al's Spec bait. In addition, there's a compound cut in the bottom jaw that forms the impression of a tongue in the better-made Spec baits.
The head of a Ramco bait is similar to Al's Spec but with more of a right angle cut in the jaw joint. In addition, it lacks a compound cut in the bottom jaw. Head of a Ramco
