Detailed Differences in Spec Body Shapes

The above schematic is the characteristic shape of an Al's Spec bait. Body shape variations in other spec baits are seen in the shoulder length and angle, body diameter variations across the body length, and overall length.

Night Hawk

Night Hawk - Head Diameter: 7/8th inch Body Length: 3-3/8th inches

Shoulder Description: The shoulder doesn't start sloping until about 1-1/2th inches from the front jaw's edge. The shoulder on this Night Hawk lure slope's gently, making the breaking point a soft transition for both back and belly just past the belly hook.

Hardware: The line-tie and tail-hook have washers. There is a hook-cup on the belly hook.

Al's Spec

Al's Spec - Head Diameter: 15/16th inch Body Length: 2-7/8th inches

Shoulder Description: The shoulder starts sloping about 1/2 inch from the front jaw's edge. The back of the lure tapers more so than the belly, which is relatively flat.

Hardware: No washers or cups on hooks or line-tie.

Ramco Speck

Ramco Speck - Head Diameter: 1 inch Body Length: about 3 inches

Shoulder Description: The sholder starts sloping about 1-1/8th inches from the front jaw's edge. The back of the lure tapers more so than the belly. Compared to Al's Spec, the belly is more rounded.

Hardware: A tail-cap and a pressed washer on the belly hook.

Now let's get back to identifying the Night Hawk by considering what is found in the published record.
