Several established reference works illustrate a variety of "Night Hawk" lures.
Pictures of the Night Hawk in Karl White's later work(1), show two different baits that are both different from the Night Hawk here and illustrated in Luckey's work(2). The lure pictured on page 285:A-14, described as older, looks more like a Ramco Speck than the one found in Luckey's. The spots are large, not small. The mouth is square with a full bottom jaw that lacks compound cuts. Even more interesting, the lure appears to have three, if not four treble hooks.
Another Night Hawk labeled Strikemaster #6352 is pictured on page 117:C-13. This bait is also white with large black spots. The seemingly obtuse mouth has short jaws relative to the length of the face. The shoulder on this example extends beyond the belly hook enough that it might rather be described as a back that bends into a short tail length.
The lure pictured in both editions of Murphy & Edminsten's work(3,4) looks similar to the one pictured in White's work on 117:C-13. It's also white with large black spots. However, the shoulder stops above the belly hook, not beyond it. Also, the bottom jaw appears to be cut short, and there doesn't appear to be a hook-cup on the belly hook.
The softback version of Streater's Bible(5) has a catalog representation of the #6300 Night Hawk that has small spots and glass eyes. The shoulder starts above or before the belly hook. The angle of the illustration prevents describing the lure beyond the eyes.
The common record, and a general investigation into "spec baits", suggests that Mr. Bourdon's postulations about the production of A.T. Death lures are warranted. There is variation in the body shape, pattern and hardware of lures labeled "Night Hawk". It's noticeable that the variation is apparent in just a small number of standard reference works.
In addition, there are other speck baits that seem related to Death, Al, and Ramco spec baits.
